What is new and exciting for 2012?

Some new event formats!

In 2011, we introduced the concept of the Adventure Navigation Runs, which proved to be an exciting new way to experience orienteering based on the line orienteering concept. So, we will be bringing two Adventure Navigation Runs to our event line-up for 2012. . Also, in the fall we will be bringing out the first ever 3-hr Urban Orienteering Race using the area of Gordon Head/UVIC/10 Mile Point. See details on each of these exciting event formats below.

In addition, we would like to bring you your usual great line-up of events that have been our favourites over the years including the very popular Determinator Series, which runs over five consecutive Wednesday nights commencing in April and consists of some great courses using the Goat-O format. We will also make a return to Newcastle Island for an excellent 2-day multi-course competition and also re-introduce our most strenuous orienteering event the 3 hour mini-rogaine at Camp Thunderbird.

  • Adventure Navigation Runs - these events will take us into new wilderness areas in the Victoria area that have not yet used for orienteering. The adventure run concept consist of a trail walk/run with requirements to navigate an exact mapped route. Hidden along the route are a number of controls that can only be found if the orienteer does not deviate from the mapped route. An excellent training event for those experienced orienteers trying to work on their running speed, and adventure runners looking for a challenge and something different to do as a training activity. It is also great for beginners just starting to learn how to read a map and navigate on the move. Dates for our Adventure Navigation Runs are scheduled for Highlands Area (11 Mar) and Partridge Hills (30 Sep - to be confirmed)
  • 3 hour Urban Orienteering Race - We now have an extensive area mapped for orienteering including Gordon Head, 10 Mile Point and the UVIC Campus. Our plan in the fall, will be to combine these mapped areas into one exciting 3-hr Street Orienteering Race. This race may occur in stages as the orienteer reaches a new area. This can be an great team or solo event. Details are currently being worked out. Look for more information to be posted as the dates draw nearer. This event is planned for Nov 2012 - date to be confirmed.
